Poll code of conduct hits tribal projects
KOZHIKODE: The comprehensive development projects initiated in the state’s tribal colonies will be hit hard when the order to continue the ‘committed social workers’ put on hold due to polls. Though they were recruited for three years, the Assembly elections were announced after the completion of two years and all government orders kept in abeyance.
Nineteen workers were appointed for tribal colonies in Wayanad and Kozhikode.
In Wayanad, a comprehensive development project was started in
Panamaram, Pulpally, Muppainad, Thirunelly, Mullankolli, Poothadi, Meppadi and Noolpuzha colonies.
The project started in May 2015 had already initiated formation of societies in each panchayat. “The project was aimed at building of houses for the tribal people and formation of tribal welfare societies with 25 to 50 members each.
Coordinators were selected from the colony inmates. They were trained in breeding cattle, tailoring, and other skills by these societies,” said Eswaran N.K., a committed social worker from Wayanad.
In Kozhikode Ambumala tribal colony, a social worker was appointed after frequent incidents of spurious liquor and reports that children were getting addicted.
Within his short period of service, social worker Kunhikannan R. could transform many of them and inspire them to document their history book titled Enkale Pire (our house).
The book was scheduled to be released soon. Now, they fear that all such activities will be dropped in the absence of a guide. “The book is in its final stage. Even if I get down from the position, as an outsider, I would be able to help them to script the book. This is a responsibility as a human being,” he said.
