HC takes up Chennamaneni’s citizenship row

HYDERABAD: Justice Bollam Vijaysen Reddy on Thursday heard the writ case filed by Vemulawada TRS MLA Chennamaneni Ramesh challenging the Union home secretary’s orders that he was not an Indian citizen.

His counsel Y. Rama Rao argued that the home secretary had evaded fulfilling duty cast under section 10(3) of Citizenship Act. Under this provision, the Union ministry has to look at whether continuation of his citizenship was conducive to the public good or not. Though the High Court specifically mentioned it, the Union government has unilaterally issued orders against the four-time legislator, counsel said.

He contended that using an old passport issued by Germany could not be said that his client did not relinquish the citizenship of Germany.

The case was adjourned to Monday for further hearing.
