Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court on Monday directed the state government and the DGP to file their respective counters within four weeks, in a suo motu petition filed against the death of Mohammed Khadeer on February 16 due to alleged torture and third degree methods used against him by Medak police while in custody.
Khadeer succumbed in Gandhi Hospital, while undergoing treatment.
Accusing him of theft and chain snatching, the police picked him up on January 29 and released him on February 2. On February 9, he was admitted to a hospital in Medak. As his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad on February 12. Doctors found that his kidneys were damaged.
While undergoing treatment, Khadeer issued a video statement detailing the brutality he was subject to while in police custody. He died on February 16.
Based on news reports, the High Court took up a suo motu petition and his wife Siddeswari filed a petition before the High Court seeking directions to the state government to pay a compensation of '50 lakh to her.
Two petitions were heard on Monday. The division bench, headed by Chief Justice Alok Aradhe, directed the DGP and the government to file their counters.
