SPMVV’s Padma Tarang: Mimes, classical vocals and folk dances enthrall audience

TIRUPATI: The fourth day of Padma Tarang - the 36th south zone inter-university youth fest being held by the Sri Padmavathi Mahila Viswa Vidyalayam (SPMVV) in Tirupati, saw some captivating performances in mime, classical vocal solo and tribal folk dances on Friday.

The dominant theme of most mimes performed by student artistes of various universities was ‘atrocities against women.’ The mimes highlighted societal and domestic violence and how youth can act against it. Student artistes from Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies presented a mime on difficulties in fishermen’s lives and the uncertainty in their profession.

SPMVV student artistes presented a mime on the theme Jungle, based on a true story of elephants’ life put at risk by poachers placing bombs in pineapples. The mime sent out a message that conservation of wildlife helps ecosystems retain its balance with nature.

University of Kerala presented a mime on the power of Nari Shakti and how a woman can overcome atrocities against her.

Meanwhile, classical vocal solos were another highlight of the day with student singers from across various universities performing Carnatic and Hindustani music. A visually challenged student, Vishnu Priya from Kannur University, who sang melodiously in Carnatic music, received huge applause from the audience.

Around 12 teams have participated in tribal folk dance competitions.

Student artistes presented tribal dance art forms based on their culture and tradition. While SPMVV student artistes presented tribal folkdance on Gangamma Jatara, Bharathidasan University students performed a folk dance in Karakattam.

SPMVV informed that prizes would be awarded individually to all the winners in the valedictory function on Saturday.
