Tributes paid to Babu Jagjivan Ram on birth anniversary

VIJAYAWADA: Rich tributes were paid to freedom fighter, veteran Congressman and former Union minister Babu Jagjivan Ram, during his 116th birth anniversary celebrations in AP on Wednesday.

Governor S. Abdul Nazeer paid rich tributes to Jagjivan Ram at an event held in Raj Bhavan and Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy did so at the CM’s Camp Office. YSRC leaders held a meeting in the party headquarters and recalled the services of Jagjivan Ram, who hailed from a Dalit family in Bihar.

At Raj Bhavan, the Governor offered floral tributes to Jagjivan Ram on his portrait. Nazeer described Jagjivan Ram as a great freedom fighter, crusader for social justice, an outstanding Parliamentarian and a true democrat. “Jagjivan Ram served as a Union minister for a long time and also championed the cause of the poor and the oppressed classes,” the Governor noted.

In the CM’s camp office, besides Jagan Mohan Reddy, social welfare minister Merugu Nagarjuna, MP Nandigama Suresh, MLC Arun Kumar, chief secretary K.S. Jawahar Reddy and officials from the CMO were present.

The birth anniversary celebrations were organised at the YSR Congress central office in Tadepalli. Party chief whip in the legislative council, Ummareddy Venkateswarlu said Jagjivan Ram's life is an inspiration for today's generation.

In Telugu Desam party office, politburo member Varla Ramaiah, former ministers Nakka Ananda Babu and K.S. Jawahar and other leaders paid floral tributes to Jagjivan Ram. They alleged “suppression of Dalits” in the state under the YSR Congress government for the past four years.

Naidu describes Jagjivan Ram as ideal leader

Telugu Desam chief Nara Chandrababu Naidu has described Babu Jagjivan Ram as an ideal leader who strove hard for establishing a casteless society.

The TD chief said Jagjivan Ram played a key role in modernizing the Indian agriculture sector and came up with laws to safeguard the interests of the workforce.

AP BJP chief Somu Veerraju paid tributes to Jagjivan Ram, along with his other leaders by garlanding the portrait of Jagjivan Ram at the party office. He described Ram as an ideal leader and opined that his services to the farmers could never be forgotten.

In Congress party’s state office, APCC president Gidugu Rudraraju along with APCC leaders Sunkara Padmasri and others paid floral tributes to Jagjivan Ram and recalled his services. The Congress leaders went to gymkhana grounds and paid floral tributes to the Jagjivan Ram statue.
