Activists fume after pictures of dead dogs at GHMC centre go viral

HYDERABAD: Animal lovers from the city are fuming at the photos of dead dogs at the animal birth control and anti-rabies programme (ABC) centre of GHMC in Fathullaguda. Animal activists are in anguish after a photo of the dead dogs was posted on WhatsApp groups, including of Blue Cross.

One of the centres at Fathullaguda is handled by GHMC and the other by People for Animals (PFA) an NGO. Both together perform 160 birth control operations every day.

Vasanthi Vadi, president of PFA, said that she was not aware of any dog deaths at the centre.

Animal activist Shafali Revathi said, “Photos which are circulated in the social media groups wrenched our hearts. Many dogs are killed in the name of ABC surgery. The GHMC and the NGO treat stray dogs in a very cruel manner. They do not give any proper information to animal activists.”

Deccan Chronicle contacted Dr Ranjit, deputy director (veterinary), LB Nagar zone, “Most of the dogs are those that have been rescued from accidents or terminal conditions. Five dogs died today at Fathullaguda during birth control operations.”

Dr Abdul Wakil, GHMC’s chief veterinary officer, said, “the panic situation was created by two outsourced contract workers, who were removed from their job as both of them used to beat dogs. The video went viral on social media on April 22.”
