Low pressure over Bay to speed up monsoon
Visakhapatnam: A low pressure is likely to form over Bay of Bengal around June 8 and the system is likely to help the southwest monsoon to pick up pace for its onset over Andhra Pradesh.
A report from IMD Amaravati on Monday said the conditions were favourable for the onset of monsoons over Kerala in another two to three days. Senior IMD scientist S. Karunasagar said westerly winds were getting stronger and the low pressure in Bay of Bengal might neutralise the impact of another low pressure area in Arabian Sea.
The scientist said the monsoons would set in over Andhra Pradesh a week after it reaches Kerala.
Meanwhile, the report forecast heat waves for several parts of Andhra Pradesh on June 6 and June 7. The temperature is likely to go up by 4.5 degrees Celsius above the maximum normal.
“The temperature will be high in Anantapur and Bapatla,’’ Karunasagar said.
Reports said many towns wore a deserted look as high temperatures forced people to remain indoors from 10 am to 5 pm. Normal life was affected. Vijayawada turned into an oven, the local residents complained.
Environmentalists suggested that people use Khus Khus mats and roller mats made of bamboo to check hot air flowing into houses.
