Heavy rain havoc kills 4 in coastal Karnataka, CM asks to take up relief measures

Mangaluru/Udupi: Four people died in rain-related incidents as heavy downpour continues to batter in Coastal Karnataka districts. Several houses were partially damaged due to rain in the last two days.

As heavy rains continue to batter the state, chief minister Siddaramaiah instructed the officials to take up immediate relief measures for rain-affected people in Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, and Udupi districts. The chief minister instructed the district in-charge ministers Dinesh Gundu Rao, Lakshmi Hebbalkar, and Mankal Vaidya to visit their respective districts and take stock of the situation.

The continuous downpour for three consecutive days has resulted in a flood-like situation in several locations. According to Udupi district administration Dinakar Shetty (53) of Ulthur in Kundapur taluk who was driving a bike skid and fell into the lake near the road and died on July 4. Sheshadri Aithal (73) of Yadamoge of the same Taluk fell into the stream while crossing a makeshift bridge and died.

In Dakshina Kannada, Suresh Shetty (53) of Someshwar village died after falling into a stream while he was crossing it. The district administration has given a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to his family members.

Santhosh (34) of Kulai village died due to electrocution. The electric wire had fallen along with a tree and Santhosh got trapped under it.

As many as 15 houses were partially damaged in Udupi and one in Dakshina Kannada district. In Uttara Kannada district 3 houses were fully damaged while one house was partially damaged. A relief center has been opened at Government Primary School, Handigon in Uttara Kannada district where six people took shelter.

In the wake of heavy rain forecast for next couple of days, holiday has been declared for all schools, PU Colleges, and government-aided and private institutions in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts on July 6.

As per the data available on Wednesday morning Karwar, Honnavar, and Shirali of Uttara Kannada recorded 18 cm rain. Mulki in Dakshina Kannada received 17 cm rain.
