HYDERABAD: The Osmania General Hospital has been reeling from a severe shortage of bed facilities in various departments, requiring an additional 1,800 beds to meet demands across 22 departments of the hospital.
Hospital sources said that the highest need in the general medicine ward, which requires 340 beds, followed by the orthopaedics and DVL (dermatology, venereology and leprosy) wards, with requirements of 130 and 115, respectively.
They said that as per the exact estimate, they require 1,812 beds. At present, the hospital has 1,092 beds, including 13 casualty beds, 337 ICU beds, 666 general ward beds and 76 post-operative ones.
Officials said that the major issue with patient occupancy was during the admissions, in case no bed is available.
“We do not deny admission despite a shortage of beds. With the number of patients increasing now, sometimes we have to make some adjustments for the time being before a bed is available for the patient. A new facility, with around 2,000 beds, would be able to meet the demands of the number of patients coming in,” a senior official of the hospital said.
Officials said that their demand for the new building is to meet requirements to facilitate 41 facilities, including staff, student and doctor accommodations.
“The new building we are demanding will also house the facilities of various departments, such as pathology, blood bank, lecture halls, demonstration rooms, physiotherapy centre, radiology centre and more,” the official said.
At present, the hospital premises has three functional buildings, of GHMC, OP and QQDC.
