NIZAMABAD: Two B. Tech students have drowned in Kakatiya Main Canal at Mendora village in Nizamabad.
Putta Venu Yadav, Balguri Pranav Rao and Gnandeep of Gayatri Nagar went to Sriram Sagar Project (SRSP) on Friday evening. There they met their classmate, Nomula Bhavith Reddy. The group decided to bathe in the canal.
Unable to assess the depth of the canal amid heavy water flow, Venu and Pranav drowned.
SRSP officials stopped the water release into the canal to trace the victims. Mendora SI Gundaveni Srinivas pressed into service expert swimmers to recover the bodies. Police shifted the bodies to the Balkonda government hospital mortuary for post-mortem on Saturday.
The SI advised the people to not venture into the Kakatiya Canal for swimming. Minister for roads and buildings V. Prashanth Reddy and Nizamabad MLC Kalvakuntla Kavitha expressed grief over the deaths.
