THOOTHUKUDI: A 14-year-old girl boxer died during a boxing match at the government sports stadium here on Friday. Ninth standard student Mareswari, daughter of Kennedy of Soreespuram, participated in the under-14 category of the boxing tournament for girls, held at the government sports stadium.
She reportedly fainted during the drink interval after two rounds. She was given first aid at the stadium and taken to a nearby private hospital. Finding her condition critical, doctors there referred her to the Thoothukudi medical college hospital, where she was ‘declared dead’. Thoothukudi south police have registered a case.
It is alleged that the district sports authorities have not made necessary medical facilities available in view of the tournament. Not even a single doctor was appointed to check the fitness of sportspersons participating in the tournament.
