Andhra farmers stir against agri society not giving loans
Kakinada: Farmers of six villages in Korukonda mandal of East Godavari district staged a dharna in front of the Primary Agriculture Cooperative Credit Society at Srirangapatnam village on Saturday. They were protesting against the society not releasing loans to farmers due to internal differences between its managing committee and the society’s secretary.
Previously, Korukonda mandal had four societies. But three of them had been wound up and merged with Srirangapatnam society for better functioning. But owing to political differences between those managing the society, turnover of the society has fallen to ₹6 crore from ₹20 crore, BJP leader A.P.R. Chowdary explained.
Leading the agitation at the Primary Agriculture Cooperative Credit Society in Srirangapatnam, Chowdary said during past 40 years, five societies had been successfully running in their area. They all successfully served farmers without any issues. But after YSRC came to power, the societies had been merged and now there is only one of them functioning at Srirangapatnam.
The BJP leader said even this society is not being run efficiently. It is maintaining no records and many irregularities are taking place. Farmers of the area are being forced to approach other societies or private lenders for loans.
Chowdary demanded that the government and cooperative department sort out the issue soon and take steps to improve the functioning of the society. Otherwise, farmers in the mandal will launch a major agitation, he warned.
