HYDERABAD: South Central Railways General Manager Arun Kumar Jain on Thursday called the plan to set up a railway manufacturing unit in Kazipet, for which the Prime Minister will lay the foundation on Saturday, a prestigious project not only for the Railways but also for the people of Telangana.

Addressing a press conference ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit, Arun Kumar said that the manufacturing unit will be set up at a cost of Rs 521 crore.

Arun Kumar said: “This is the first Indian Railway manufacturing unit that is being set up in Telangana and will contribute towards the overall development of the region.”

“The construction of the Railway manufacturing unit at Kazipet is another major step in taking forward the Prime Minister's initiative of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’. To begin with, the unit will have the capacity to manufacture 1,200 wagons per year. From the second year, this will be scaled up to 2,400 wagons per year,” he said.

“This manufacturing unit will produce various types of rolling stock based on the requirements. It will spur the eco-system of new industrial development in Hanamkonda and play an important role in the socio-economic progress of the people of the region,” Arun Kumar said.

The GM said that the unit will ensure better availability of rolling stock.

“In addition, the increased production of rolling stock will not only spur the economic growth of the state but also of the Indian economy, for transporting critical and much-needed bulk commodities across the country,” Arun Kumar said.
