Efforts of GWMC officials help Warangal selected under GNLC by UNESCO

WARANGAL: With the efforts from officials of the Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation and city mayor Gundu Sudharani, Warangal was selected under the Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC) by UNESCO.

After learning about GNLC introduced by the UNESCO in August 21, municipal commissioner Praveenya along with mayor Gundu Sudharani took the initiative and advised the GWMC officials to apply through the municipal administration and urban development department of the state government.

The Telangana government forwarded the application to the national commission in Delhi.

After pursuing the application sent by the Union Government, UNESCO considered it under GNLC in January 2022.

Warangal is among the 294 cities in 76 countries and third among the three cities from India – the other two cities are Nilambur and Thrissur in Kerala – to have been selected thus.

Expressing happiness, Mayor Sudharani said Warangal city is highly suitable for learning city concepts. Several programmes implemented under GWMC and introduced by the Telangana government helped in making Warangal city to be among the learning cities framework of UNESCO.

The development of the city is reaching its peak level with regular learning and feedback mechanisms from people.

Municipal minister KT Rama Rao had announced Warangal as a future city. In accordance with programmes like Pattana Pragathi, development of parks, turning Warrangal into a green city with implementation of Haritha Haram, storm water drains and urbanization along with beautification of the city helped in the selection by UNESCO, she said.

Panchayat Raj minister Errabelli Dayakar Rao congratulated the people of Warangal.
