Road connectivity badly hit in flood-hit villages

ADILABAD: Road connectivity remains badly affected in villages affected by the recent floods. Floods breached roads and culverts at various places while in some places, bridges washed away.

The worst-hit are Indravelli, Kotapalli, Vemanapalli, Tiryani, Kerameri, Narnoor, Gadeguda, Lingapur and Sirpur (U) mandals in the erstwhile Adilabad district.

Officials have not taken up the restoration works and say there was no funds. In some places, officials effected temporary repairs but subsequent rains caused more damage.

The Panchayatraj and R & B departments have prepared loss estimates and submitted them to the government, but officials say lack of funds was stalling the restoration works.

The region encompassing former Adilabad district received the highest rainfall in the state from July 8 to 14. The loss of crops and breaches to culverts, tanks, and roads are high in the region.

Officials of the Komaram Bheem Asifabad district identified the damage to assets and houses as also bridges and culverts, to a value of `30 crore and submitted estimates to the government.

People of more than 50 villages are facing hardships with loss of road/bridge connectivity as a culvert was washed away at Keema Naik Thanda in Lingapur mandal.

Vehicle movement was affected on this road and transportation was badly affected to Tiryani, Lingapur and Jainoor mandals. Officials made some temporary arrangements to repair the culvert with gravel and cement pipes.

Elected representatives said the Roads and Buildings department officials visited the spot and cited the problem of lack of funds to construct a bridge on the rivulet where the culvert on a ring road was washed away in Keema Naik Thanda.

Yadagiri Jadhav of Tiryani mandal said the people of the area were facing a lot of problems due to the bad road connectivity and more so after the culvert was washed away at Keema Naik Thanda.

Sarpanchs of Keema Naik Thanda and Loddiguda gram panchayat appealed to the officials to build a new culvert at the earliest. Local R & B officials said they would sanction ` 5 lakh to construct a small bridge, but this would not serve the purpose.

Recently, a lactating woman of Kheriguda of Tiryani mandal faced hardships while crossing the damaged culvert when she was going to a hospital in Jainoor. The local people first crossed the newborn baby and later the mother and then the two boarded a vehicle stationed on the other side.

Political leaders alleged that there was no response from the central government for releasing of relief funds though they have estimated a loss due to the present floods to an extent of `1,400 crore. One of them, Indrakaran Reddy appealed to the central government to release at least `1,000 crore immediately.

A total of 13 R & B roads were breached and damaged at various places and 32 panchayat Raj roads too were breached and eight more were damaged or washed away in Komaram Bheem Asifabad district.

Meanwhile, 69 Panchayat Raj roads and 49 bridges and culverts as also 45 R & B roads were damaged in the Nirmal district.
