Family of brain-dead woman saves seven lives

TIRUPATI: The decision of a brain-dead patient’s family members to donate her organs has helped seven critical patients.

Keerthi, a resident of Ramapuram Harijanawada in Pichatur mandal of Chittoor district, had been undergoing treatment at the Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital in Chennai. She had met with an accident while going to attend a marriage in Karadiputhur near Chennai. Her condition did not improve despite the efforts of doctors, who then declared her brain-dead.

At this juncture, Rajiv Gandhi hospital dean Dr. E. Therani Rajan approached Keerthi’s parents, Sampath Kumar and Ammulu, with the suggestion of organ donation. The parents said: "Keerthi used to say that when someone dies, they should donate their organs. Today, we have fulfilled her wish.”

Authorities in Chennai then facilitated the organ donation process. This ensured that Keerthi's organs got swiftly transplanted into seven recipients in different hospitals. This act not only honoured Keerthi's memory but also gave a second chance at life to those in dire need.

Dr. Therani Rajan said in a tribute to Keerthi's generosity, a walk of honour was organised at the Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital in Chennai, where friends, families and medical staff gathered to pay their respects. Dr. Rajan has appealed to public to consider organ donation, as organ transplantation serves the critical need of saving lives.
