Akasa Air to allow pets in cabin

New Delhi: For all those pet parents who love to travel with their furry friends, here is a bit of good news. The new airline in the Indian aviation section–Akasa Air–has announced it will allow pets under 7 kg in the cabin in its domestic flights while the rest, up to 100 kg, can fly in cargo from November 1.

“Domesticated dogs and cats can travel from November and the bookings in this regard will start from October 15,” the airline's officials said on Thursday during an event to mark the 60 days of commercial operations.

While the lighter pets can travel with passengers in the cabin, pets weighing 7-32 kg will have to be checked-in at the airport. And pets weighing 32-100 kg need to be checked-in at the cargo terminal.

Akasa will be the second airline after Air India to allow pets to travel. Air India as of now allows only two pets in cabin per flight, for which the last row of business class and economy can be reserved along with the pet owner.

“Small inoffensive domestic pets such as dogs, cats and birds, accompanied by valid health and rabies vaccination certificates, will be accepted on AI domestic flights in the cabin or in cargo hold subject to approval of flight commander. Weight of the pet, including the container , should not exceed 5 kg for carriage in the cabin. Pets of larger size/weight will be carried in the cargo hold,” Air India rules say.
