PM Modi Expresses Solidarity with Israel Amid Missile Attack by Hamas

Air India cancelled its October 7 flights AI139 from Delhi to Tel Aviv and AI140 from Tel Aviv to Delhi

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday expressed solidarity with Israel after the country faced a missile attack from the militant group Hamas along the Gaza border and declared a state of war. India also issued an advisory for its nationals, asking them to remain vigilant and follow the safety protocols as issued by the local authorities.

“Deeply shocked by the news of terrorist attacks in Israel. Our thoughts and prayers are with the innocent victims and their families. We stand in solidarity with Israel at this difficult hour,” Mr Modi said in a message on X.

The Israeli Ambassador to India Naor Gilon said his country appreciates the support of the people of India.

“Israel is currently fighting to repel coordinated, large and multi-pronged Palestinian terror attacks…The cowardly actions of Hamas, targeting and killing women, children and the elderly, injuring hundreds of civilians and firing indiscriminately over 2,000 missiles and rockets at our cities, came during the sacred Jewish holiday of Simchat Torah."

"Israel will repel this combined assault of rocket fire and ground infiltration by Hamas terrorists and will take any and all actions to protect our citizens. We appreciate the support of the people of India as we stand firm in the face of terrorism,” Gilon said on the counteroffensive operation "Swords of Iron".

No response was available from the Palestine embassy in Delhi. However, President of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas in a statement, said, “We have the right to defend ourselves against Israel and settler terrorism."

In its advisory, the Indian embassy in Tel Aviv said: “In view of the current situation in Israel, all Indian nationals in Israel are requested to remain vigilant and observe safety protocols as advised by local authorities. Please exercise caution, avoid unnecessary movement and stay close to safety shelters.” It gave out phone numbers and emails and adding that the embassy personnel were available for any guidance.

Air India cancelled its October 7 flights — AI139 from Delhi to Tel Aviv and AI140 from Tel Aviv to Delhi — "in the interests and safety of guests and crew". Air India said passengers are being extended all support, as per their requirements.
