Kudumbashree water at Rs 1 per litre
KOZHIKODE: Foreseeing a severe drought looming over the city from March due to deficient rainfall in the south-west monsoon, Kudumbashree is all set to launch a mega drinking water project shortly. Kudumbashree units working within the Corporation limits have come up with a plan to provide water at a minimal cost of Rs 1 per litre. For the city residents who spend Rs 50 for 20 litres of purified water, the mega drinking water project will be a great relief, as they will get these 20 litres of purified water by paying just Rs 20. “Scientists of the Centre for Water Resource Development Management, based on several studies predicted the drought, and hence such a drinking water project would be a boon,” said Ramsy Ismail, Kudum-bashree Project Officer.
After discussions with an agency about the installation of a water treatment plant, it has been decided to install a plant within the old corporation office having a capacity to treat an average of 1000 litres per day. The maximum capacity of the tank is expected to be 20,000 litres. The government has a scheme to provide a treatment plant at a subsidised rate, and that will be utilized for the project in addition to Kudumbas-hree funds.
“Water treated using premium technology is going to be sold at a highly subsidised rate within the Corporation limits. Our mission is to tie up with a government agency to start up this mission. Kudumbashree workers themselves would be deployed in the distribution of the water within the city limits. During the Council meeting to be held soon, the project would be presented for further modification or suggestions from the authorities”, the Project Officer added.
