Cyclone Mocha may not affect AP

VISHAKHAPATNAM: The Cyclone Mocha forming in the south Bay of Bengal would not have any impact on Andhra Pradesh nor would it bring heavy rainfall, the IMD has said.

IMD Amaravati director Stella S said on Sunday that the weather system was likely to form into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal around May 9 and then intensify into a cyclonic storm.

Cyclone Mocha (pronounced as Mokha) was moving north towards central Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Andaman Sea.

“The weather system cannot lead to heavy rainfall in Andhra Pradesh in the coming days. Andaman and Nicobar Islands would have heavy rainfall on May 10 and 11 due to the weather system,” she said.

Parts of the Rayalaseema region may witness light rainfall in the next two days due to the cyclone circulation over southwest Bay of Bengal off north Tamil Nadu coast.

No heat wave conditions are likely over Andhra Pradesh during the next five days, said another IMD official, Sagili Karunasagar.

Parts of Rayalaseema region and a few places of coastal Andhra Pradesh witnessed rainfall on Saturday. A few places in ASR and Parvathipuram Manyam districts received moderate rainfall on Sunday.

A huge tree fell due to heavy rain at Paderu town in ASR district.
Nandyal in Rayalaseema region recorded 38.2 degree C on Sunday, the highest in the state, followed by 37.9 in Kavali, 37.3 in Kurnool, 37 in Nellore and Jangamaheswarapuram, 36.6 in Kakinada and Bapatla, 36.4 in Tirupati and Gannavaram and 36 in Machilipatnam and Nandigama.

Though Vizag recorded between 33 and 35 degree C on Sunday, the high relative humidity (86 per cent) caused discomfort to the people. Weatherman said the sultry weather was likely to stay on for a few more days in north coastal Andhra Pradesh.
