SLPs on R5 Zone of Amaravati: SC to hear pleas next week

VIJAYAWADA: The Supreme Court will hear next week the pleas in a batch of special leave petitions (SLPs) opposing the R5 Zone that had allowed allotment of house sites to the poor in Amaravati.

Farmers of the Amaravati capital region have been agitating against the state government’s plan to shift the administrative base to Visakhapatnam. They filed these petitions in the apex court, challenging the AP high court order allowing the AP government to allot house sites to nearly 50,000 poor families.

The high court recently dismissed the farmers’ writ petitions challenging the GO for distribution of house site pattas to non-locals and low-income residents, which in short, is referred to as R5 Zone.

Counsel for the farmers, in a special mention before the division bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Monday, requested that their petitions be taken up for immediate hearing. The CJI agreed to hear the pleas next week.

The Amaravati farmers, backed by the Telugu Desam, were opposing allotment of house sites to the poor in Capital Amaravati. They complain that the government action would cause demographic imbalance.

The AP government had amended the APCRDA act to allot house sites to the poor in Amaravati.

The high court, last week, paved the way for distribution of the house site pattas to weaker sections and non-locals as part of the R5 Zone.

HC chief justice Prashanth Mishra made some interesting observations, like saying, “The distribution of house site pattas to the weaker sections is also tantamount to the development of the capital region.”
