Residents to warm up to Khamba composting system

The inhibition is quiet deep among residents who feel that the Khamba method would result in stink.

Chennai: It has been over eight years since Khamba culture started spreading in Chennai, but the fact that only five pots get sold in a day speaks about the sense of environment consciousness of city residents.

The inhibition is quiet deep among residents who feel that the Khamba method would result in stink. “Only if non vegetarian remains are put in the pot, it would stink. But it can be eradicated by adding neem powder or a mix of calcium and lime,” said V. Damodaran from Velachery. He has been using it for the past one year.

People find it unworthy to spend Rs 2,500 on Khambas. They fail to realise that they don’t have to spend on the polythene bags every month, said Navneeth Raghavan, Madras clone, Daily dump. (She can be reached at 9840082607)
“In a normal day, only five pots get sold. It increases if promotions and awareness campaigns are held,” she said. Also, the price would come down with the demand. The city has just five distributors unlike Bengaluru that has more than 15, she added.

“What do we do with the manure? This is the most asked question by the people in apartments, who cannot do terrace or backyard gardening. Manure can be sold to nurseries at Rs 20-30 per kilogram,” Navneeth said.
