LDF set to control Calicut University syndicate
KOZHIKODE: The Calicut University syndicate will be under the control of the LDF by this month-end as the senate term ends by September 29. The syndicate members’ term will also end as they are nominated from the senate. Except the state government nominees from among the bureaucrats, the rest have to go out. It is learnt that the state government would nominate new members to the syndicate committee, which in the absence of senate would have full power.
At present, the UDF has majority in the syndicate, including the VC and registrar, who are also the nominees of the UDF. Until the elections to the senate are over, the nominated syndicate committee can exercise the duties of the senate. “Though the LDF government assumed power one year back, we couldn’t implement our policies effectively in the university due to the lack of majority in the syndicate. However, once the term of senate expires, the state government can appoint their nominees to the syndicate and also retain the control after new elections to the syndicate,” said a present syndicate member. The term of the senate is three years.
Calicut University Registrar Dr T. A. Abdul Majeed said that the process of elections to the senate had started. “The Vice-Chancellor has directed to start the process of elections and appointed me as the returning officer. It would take a few months to complete the electoral roll and the section concerned has been asked to prepare the roll,” the registrar said.
