Maoist point man lawyer arrested in Madurai
Chennai: Officially Murugesan was a lawyer who represented arrested Maoists in court. But sleuths from the Q branch, which monitors extremist activities in the state, on Sunday after an early morning search and arrest of Murugesan from his house in Alankulam in Madurai, said he was the point man of the banned CPI (Maoists) and had been giving shelter to its members, besides sending medicines to tri-junction, the hub of Naxalites situated in the forest area where the borders of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka merge.
“He is the brother of wanted left extremist Velmurugan,” a senior official here said. During the search of his home, the sleuths seized more than 250 cartons of homoeopathy medicines, digital dossiers containing video clippings of the Maoists being given armed training and a number of other documents, sources said here.
All the homeopathic medicines were believed to be meant for the Maoist cadres operating in the tri-junction. Of the medicines seized, a good quantity was found to be for treatment of snakebite.
“We have been watching his operation. We searched his house after obtaining the required warrant. Though he is a lawyer by profession, he was doing certain things which were beyond the call of duty. He had given shelter to wanted Maoist activists like Chandra and Kala before we arrested them six months back.
Murugesan used to travel to the tri - junction. He used to function as a ‘nodal officer’ who was a liaison and communicated between those who are in tri-junction jungle and other parts of the country”, a police officer noted.
Meanwhile, Murugesan’s wife Azhagudevi told reporters in Madurai that the Q branch search from 5.30 am at their house till 12 noon and arrested her husband which amounts to violation of his rights.
