No Geographical Indications for scrumptious Hyderabadi Biryani

'Hyderabadi Biryani' was a princely legacy of the Nizams and it was a blend of Mughlai, Persian and Andhra cuisine.

Chennai: The Geographical Indications Registry, Chennai has rejected an application from a Secunderabad-based association seeking a coveted Geographical Indications (GI) tag for scrumptious "Hyderabadi Biryani".

After filing the GI application in 2009, the Connoisseurs of Deccani Biryani Makers Association, Secunderabad failed to submit the required historical data, origin and reputation of the South Indian delicacy.

In the application, the association submitted that history of 'Biryani' as a dish which originated in Persia / Arabia and it reached India passing through different countries. Biryani was introduced to Hyderabad during the rule of Emperor Aurangazeb in the 16th century. The dish was cooked as a quick meal for soldiers engaged in war.

'Hyderabadi Biryani' was a princely legacy of the Nizams and it was a blend of Mughlai, Persian and Andhra cuisine.

In the application, the secretary sought to register the "Hyderabadi Briyani" on behalf of the association. On scrutinising the plea, the Geographical Indications Registry noted deficiencies and defects in it and sent a notice to association to rectify the deficiencies.
