Need to increase area for pulses cultivation, say RARS scientist
Karimnagar: To meet proteins requirements, there is a need to increase the land area for cultivation of pulses not only in Telangana region but also across the nation.
This was recommended by the associate director of Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS) Dr Jaganmohan Rao.
He was participating in the field-day programme organised under the district agricultural advisory and transfer of technology centre (DAATTC) in association with the Professor Jayashankar Telangana state agricultural university (PJTSAU) at Venkatraopally village under Boinapallh mandal in Rajanna Sircilla district on Thursday.
Dr Rao highlighted the importance of green gram cultivation and its role in improving soil fertility by addition of organic carbon to the soil. He emphasized to the farming community about the scope of increasing the area under pulses cultivation with suitable varieties which can be adopted in different cropping systems.
The coordinator of DAATTC, Karimnagar district, Shekar demonstrated various methods that can be carried out across the district utilizing new technologies.
He also stressed on the benefits of cultivation of green gram to farmers and explained to them that this will reduce the usage of nitrogenous fertilizers in the succeeding rice crop, which would save cost and incidence of pest and insect attacks to crops at early stages.
Scientist Dr Madan Mohan said farmers would get additional income in a matter of 60 days if they adopted green gram cultivation.
Zonal manager Sajan, senior agronomist Madhusudan, representatives from the Coromandel International and officials of the agriculture department were among those present along with public representatives.
