HYDERABAD: Raising concern over the motor accidents caused by the poor condition of roads, the Telangana High Court on Tuesday directed the GHMC and the Nizampet municipality to file a status report on the potholes in their respective jurisdictions within three weeks.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Alok Ardhe and Justice Tadakamalla Vinod Kumar also directed the civic bodies to detail the action that they took to resolve the problems caused by potholes. The court also directed them to furnish photographs.
These orders were issued in a suo motu taken-up PIL in response to news reports about the death of eight-year-old Deekshita, a second-standard student, when a school bus ran over her while she was on her to way school on August 2.
Apart from the negligent and rash driving of the bus driver, another reason for the accident was found to be that Deekshita’s father had slowed down their two-wheeler as the road was pothole-ridden, and he was trying to maneuver his way safely when the bus hit them at Bachupally. The father and Deekshita fell on the right side and the girl was run over.
The High Court also cautioned GHMC counsel that it would appoint a commission to give a report on the potholes in the Greater Hyderabad area when he tried to take the corporation off the hook by saying that Bachupally, where the mishap took place, did not fall in the corporation area.
