No Animal Birth Control to control stray dogs in Wayanad

Kozhikode left in lurch as Vet varsity limits its activities to Wayanad

KOZHIKODE: The Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU) in Wayanad is not cooperating with the implementation of Animal Birth Control program in Kozhikode district, delaying the process. "We had already announced the second phase, but unfortunately, it will have to be postponed till the hi-tech ABC hospital, Poolakadavu, under corporation is ready," ABC project implementing officer Dr Baby Kuriakose said.

The University, which had earlier expressed its willingness to conduct sterilisation camps for stray dogs, has decided to restrict its services to Wayanad. The corporation expects to complete the ABC Centre with facilities of a full-fledged veterinary hospital by March next year, but only 20 percent of its works are over owing to public agitation at various stages.

"The funds for the building and other infrastructure would get lapsed if not utilised by March. At the same time the residents are raising objections over such a facility coming up in their locality," he said. So far KVASU could only hold one such camp here for the city corporation and the second phase was expected to begin soon.

It has leased out its mobile operation theatre to Wayanad district, officials said, and so stopped its services elsewhere. On the other hand, the ABC programme initiated by Kannur district panchayat is under way in association with panchayats, municipalities, and Kannur Corporation. The mission is to capture stray dogs, sterilise and vaccinate against rabies.
