Cycling tracks may lead to more water logging points in Hyderabad
HYDERABAD: For its 709 km of cycling tracks on arterial roads, the GHMC has shortlisted eight designs of which six recommend temporary arrangements and the other two are for permanent structures.
The design of the six temporary structures is that it will not allow stormwater to flow into drains on either side of the roads, said engineering officials. They said the corporation was looking at aesthetics but not the scientific side.
Sources said some of the designs would damage the Comprehensive Road Maintenance Programme (CRMP).
A temporary cycling track would be developed at locations where there is no scope for a permanent structure. The GHMC will allow the cycle track to be used till 8 am after which it will be open for regular traffic. First off will be a three-km track from Habsiguda crossroads to Uppal crossroads.
A senior GHMC official told Deccan Chronicle the focus on aesthetics would also push up project cost. GHMC officials were projecting Rs. 20 lakh per 100 metre to complete the cycling track with an aesthetic look. The official said painting itself would cost about Rs. 17 per 100 metre.
The official opined that the government should first hold a series of meetings to pore through the cycling track designs to prevent a flop show.
