Farmers stare at losses after untimely rains damage harvested paddy

HYDERABAD: Untimely rains in various districts have damaged paddy to a considerable extent. Ahead of Yasangi season, farmers who were all set to harvest paddy incurred heavy losses due to two days of unexpected rains in the undivided Adilabad, Nizamabad, Karimnagar and others districts.

Harvesting of early sown paddy was completed at the command areas of Nizamsagar project in Nizamabad and Kamareddy districts.

The fate of farmers, who cultivated paddy under water tanks and submersible pump sets, was hit because of change in temperatures.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Rajanna, a farmer from Navipet mandal in Nizamabad district, said that they harvested paddy and dried it on roads. “Sudden downpour has soaked our entire paddy”, he lamented. Moreover, the yield was less due to pests in the Yasangi season, he said. There is no infrastructure to protect paddy from natural calamities after harvesting, he said.

However, farmers are eagerly waiting for the opening of paddy purchasing centers (PPC) in their respective villages. In order to ensure minimum support price, the state government has set up PPCs in all major panchayats and agriculture market yards. Meanwhile, officials from the agriculture department are trying to get details of the damaged paddy.
