Thanjavur: Officials of the Static Surveillance team led by Janakiraman on Wednesday seized Rs 7.85 crore from a van they intercepted at Melavasthathchavadi on Pattukottai road during a vehicle check ahead of the November 19 Thanjavur Assembly election.
As the vehicle registration number, as per the document, did not match the vehicle in which the cash was brought, the officials seized the amount. But the money belonged to Bank of Baroda and was of new currency of Rs 2,000 denomination released by the Government of India for filling in Automated Teller Machines (ATMs).
According to officials who seized the amount, there were 36,000 notes of new Rs 2,000 currency and 65,000 notes of Rs100 denomination. The amount was deposited in the treasury.
Total value of Rs 2,000 new currency is Rs 7.20 crore and Rs 100 notes is Rs 65 lakh. The new currencies have been issued following Tuesday’s demonetisation.
However Rajesh Lakhoni, Chief Electoral Officer, Tamil Nadu told DC that the money has nothing to do with elections and brought by Bank of Baroda.
