Chicken Prices Plunge After Surge

Visakhapatnam: In a market rollercoaster that unnerved consumers, the price of chicken in Andhra Pradesh returned to Rs.150 after it rose to Rs.250 per kilogram, after the end of the Kartik month.

The sudden spike was attributed to increased demand and a fall in production. The surge also impacted the cost of eggs, their price rising to Rs. 7 or more in the open market.

Despite being the largest egg producer in the country, with an average of around 5 crore eggs laid per day, Andhra Pradesh faced a decline in egg production in December. This resulted in a 35 per cent increase in the retail price of eggs, rising from Rs.4.50 on August 16 to Rs.7.50.

Poultry traders said there was a decline in egg production by 10 per cent over the last two months, causing losses. Exports dwindled due to the rise in prices.

Thatraj Appa Rao, a local shop owner, said corporate farms expanded chicken production, leading to an increase in supply. Presently, skinless chicken is selling at Rs.150-160 per kilo, and chicken with skin at Rs. 120-130.

The surplus has forced prices to drop. Traders anticipate a boost in sales during the upcoming festival season.

Despite the drop in the prices, restaurant owners have not lowered curry costs.

The vegetable market continues to shock consumers. Tomato prices were around Rs. 30 per kilo and various other vegetables were sold at above Rs. 40, maintaining their upward spiral.

* Points:

1. Chicken prices rose until October, but saw a decline since November

2. In Andhra Pradesh, egg prices remained constant, despite a decrease in supply

3. A reason for the surge in supply is the belief that consuming eggs during summer can adversely impact the body. Egg consumption is more during the winter months
