Varkala hotels shun waste revolution plans
Thiruvananthapuram: Varkala is getting ready for a waste revolution, a movement which aims at behaviour change, as Varkala Municipality’s Zero Waste Beacon project wants people to stop littering. But will it be able to touch hotels and restaurants on the side of the cliff, the ones who have never participated in the municipality’s waste management initiatives?
Sample this. “The municipality’s pickup truck stops at the taxi-stand, not in front of our restaurant. Why would anyone pay Rs 4,000 a month for that,” says Rajesh Muralidharan, employee at a restaurant which is not even 100 metres away from the stand. Many restaurants prefer dumping their waste down the cliff rather than rely on the municipality’s pickup trucks. They say the municipality vehicle does not come every week.
Owners of restaurant buildings in CRZ (Coastal Regulatory Zone) would not want to invest in a biogas plant, despite the subsidies. The ones who run restaurants do not push for it either.
