Culling of birds begins in Bidar
BIDAR: The culling of poultry infected with H5N1 virus Avian Influenza at a private farm situated on NH-9 near to Molkera village in Humanabad taluk of district began here on Tuesday.
The virus was detected in the chickens reared at the farm after reports of hundreds of birds dying in natural captivity came to light since April 19. It was confirmed after based on blood and other samples collected by the Animal Husbandry Department and sent to the Institute of High Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal.
Meanwhile senior officials of State Animal Husbandry Department and the district administration have taken up the joint operation to cull the poultry. Seven to 10 pits of 30 feet length, six feet width and six feet depth were dug at various spots at the 14-acre Arunodaya Farm. However the preliminary work in this regards had begun on Monday itself.
The infected chicken are said to be around 1.50 lakhs and will be filled in bags after being culled and dumped in to the pit which will be filled with earthen material later. Lime stone would be poured on top of it to prevent any further infection in future, an official supervising the operation informed.
