Cops extend helping hand to former criminals

HYDERABAD: Education for their children, skill training, and legal aid if required are some of the measures likely to be extended to former criminals as a helping hand in order to ensure that they do not take up crime again.

Central Crime Station (CCS), Bhuvanagiri zone of Rachakonda police on Wednesday held ‘Step Forward For Change,’ a gathering for those with a criminal past. Over 400 people with a criminal history along with their family members attended the programme held as per the directives of Rachakonda Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crimes) Madhukar Swamy.

Rachakonda police chief D.S. Chouhan while speaking on the occasion said that former criminals should try to overcome their past and make every effort to lead a good life.

Swamy said that free education will be provided by trying to give seats in government Gurukul Schools to the children of those with a criminal past. “Also, the crime sheets of those who stay away from any offence for ten years will be deleted. If need be free legal assistance will also be provided,” he said.
He said that the Lions Club of Hyderabad Green Lands will arrange a free skill training programme to provide the necessary support to the former convicts.
