Minister warns of floods in downstream River Krishna
VIJAYAWADA: Water resources minister Ambati Rambabu has warned of heavy floods in River Krishna due to water being released from Nagarjunasagar Dam, which is almost full. This is the first time this season that water is being released downstream from Nagarjunasagar.
The minister said state government has alerted officials as well as people about the huge quantities of water being released. Further, people living downstream of Pulichintala project have also been alerted.
In addition, he cautioned that there is a chance of second floods in Godavari River during the present season. “State government is ready to face the situation,” he maintained.
Rambabu refuted allegations in a section of media that state government is allotting mines to mining tycoon Gali Janardhan Reddy. He accused the opposition and its supporting media of misleading people on this issue.
He clarified that works on Polavaram project have got delayed due to flash floods. There has been no negligence on part of state government in implementing the project’s works.
The minister declared that stern action will be initiated against the company responsible for constructing the diaphragm wall without completing the cofferdam, thereby causing a huge loss to state government.
