Heavy rain lashes Hyderabad, IMD issues alert

IMD has said that similar weather conditions would prevail for the next three days and issued a yellow alert

HYDERABAD: Extremely heavy rains with lightning and thunder lashed several parts of the city from late Sunday afternoon. Dark clouds covered the sky, forcing motorists to switch on their headlamps much before dusk.

Meanwhile, IMD has said that similar weather conditions would prevail for the next three days and issued a yellow alert. It said that a trough from a cyclonic circulation over northwest Madhya Pradesh and a cyclonic circulation forming in the northwest Bay of Bengal had caused the rain.

Golconda and Musheerabad recorded the highest rainfall of 43 mm, followed by Saroornagar at 40 mm.

Almost everyone, who was caught in the rain, took shelter under the nearby metro rail viaduct, PVNR Expressway, flyovers, fuel stations, bus stops, roadside stalls, and shops. Many parts were heavily inundated leaving motorists to struggle to find a way through the roads that were full of pits. Heavy streams of water added to their difficulties.

There were lightning strikes at Dilsukhnagar, Kukatpally, Malakpet, LB Nagar, Ameerpet, Kothapet, Rajendranagar, Chandanagar, and the Old City.

Meanwhile, disaster relief force teams were engaged in clearing stagnated water at several places, including Malakpet, Manikonda, Ibrahimnagh, Attapur, Shaikpet, Bahadurpura, Jiyaguda, Erragadda, Moosarambagh and other low-lying areas.

Water-logging adversely affected traffic flow at Jubilee Hills checkpost, Nagarjuna Circle, Gachibowli Circle, Biodiversity and IKEA junctions, Raidurgam, Shaikpet, Banjara Hills, Mehdipatnam, Masab Tank, Tank Bund, Koti, Abids, MJ Market, Chikkadpally, RTC crossroads, Musheerabad and Mettuguda.
