BJP to Hold Hunger Protest over Cauvery River at Kumbakonam

Chennai: The State BJP would hold a one-day hunger strike on Mondayat Kumbakonam in support of the Cauvery delta farmers whose kuruvai paddy crops had been affected due to the inefficiency of the DMK government in getting the State’s due share of Cauvery water from Karnataka, State president K Annamalai said.

In a statement on Wednesday, Annamalai said the dispute over the sharing of river waters between the two neighbouring States always intensified when the DMK was in power and pointed out that there was no problem in Tamil Nadu getting water in the Cauvery in the last five years.

Only after the Congress, which was an ally of the DMK, came to power in Karnataka had the problem started again, he said and described the resolution passed in the Assembly on Tuesday urging the Union Government to get water from Karnataka as an eyewash.

Alleging that his party MLA, Vanathi Srinivasan was not allowed to speak in Assembly on the issue, Annamalai said that it was a murder of democracy.

So, expressing solidarity with the farmers of Cauvery delta, the BJP would hold the one-day hunger strike on October 16, which would be inaugurated by former Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan, he said.
