Association of University Teachers opposes new notification for MKU VC post

As per UGC regulations 2006, only 10 per cent of the teaching faculty can become the professors in the college.

Chennai: Association of University Teachers (AUT) has opposed the new notification calling applications for the post of Vice-Chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj University from the academicians with a minimum of 10 years of experience as the professor.

Association’s general secretary N. Pasupathy said, “According to the MKU’s existing rules and statutes professors, associate professors and readers can apply for the VC’s post. This new provision virtually blocks the government college faculty members from applying for the top post.”

As per UGC regulations 2006, only 10 per cent of the teaching faculty can become the professors in the college. Due to the opposition to this rule from the teaching faculty, no professor post was awarded to government and aided colleges in the last few years.

“It has effectively prevented many senior faculties with research experience from becoming the professors,” he said. With the new rule fixing a minimum experience of 10 years as professor helps only the university professors. “Only university professors will have 10 years of experience as professors,” he argued.

The state government is yet to adopt the UGC regulations for appointing the Vice-Chancellors.“But the VC search committee of Madurai Kamaraj University has called for applications as per UGC regulations which are in violation of the existing university act and statues,” he pointed out.

“The governor-chancellor and the search committee should immediately withdraw this provision and should count the experience of associate professors and readers in government colleges. The rule should be amended so that associate professors and readers in government colleges can also apply for the post,” he urged.
