PIL seeks nationalisation of Jayalalithaa assets
Madurai: A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the court seeking to direct the Tamil Nadu to nationalise the assets of the former CM Jayalalithaa.
Advocate K.K. Ramesh from Tamil Nadu Centre for Public Interest Litigation, Madurai filed this petition in the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court to appoint a retired high court judge to find the movable and immovable properties belonging to late CM and submit a report in this court.
He also requested the court to appoint a retired High court judge to administer those properties after the government nationalised them. Detailing her properties in the petition, Ramesh claimed that Jayalalithaa had bank deposits of Rs 10.64 crore, investment bonds of Rs 2.74 crore; jewellery worth Rs 41.64 crore and self acquired assets worth Rs 72.09 crore. Though Jayalalithaa had earned thousands of crores of movable and immovable properties, she didn't execute a will in favour of any person, claimed the petitioner.
Stating that the former CM has no direct heirs, and in every public meeting she often used to say "She is for the public and by the public", the petitioner seeks to direct the government to nationalise her properties so that all the incomes generated from it would be utilised for the welfare of the poor people in the state.
He also pointed out that the AIADMK founder and former CM MG Ramachandran had also willed all his properties for the welfare of the poor and hearing impaired people of Tamil Nadu.
As his detailed representation to home secretary, Union Ministry of Home Affairs did not yield any positive response, he approached this court, the petitioner said.
