Rs 100 crore drought relief sought by Pondy: V Narayanasamy
Puducherry: Puducherry government is taking steps to release drought relief fund to farmers of Puducherry and Karaikkal regions of the Union Territory.
The territorial administration has sought a relief of Rs 100 crore from the Centre and a detailed letter was sent to the Union Government regarding this, Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy told media persons here on Saturday.
“An unanimous resolution was adopted in the territorial assembly on January 24 and forwarded to the Centre in respect of drought relief,” he said.
The government has also sought a central team to assess the drought damage in Puducherry and Karaikal and to provide funds towards relief without delay, said Mr Narayanasamy.
Talking on dredging operations of Thengaithittu harbour here, he blamed Dredging Corporation of India for the delay. “Dredging of the estuary of the fishing harbour here was delayed as the machine went out of order. But the corporation had not taken any steps to expedite the work causing serious loss to the fishermen,” he said.
The corporation should compensate fishermen for loss of work and loss of earning due to delay in carrying out the dredging operations, he added.
