Bengaluru: People fear to tread on this footpath!

The whole stretch is not only laden with garbage, but is also broken at regular intervals.

BENGALURU: During council meetings, the BBMP members often attacked the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) about rising pollution levels, but when it comes to garbage disposal, which is its responsibility, it does not fare any better. BBMP is currently building a footpath along the Inner Ring Road from Ejipura to Domlur passing through the army residential quarters. The whole stretch is not only laden with garbage, but is also broken at regular intervals. The illegal dumping of construction debris under the transformer and on the walkways force pedestrians to use the busy road. Suraj Raj, a resident of Koramangala, finds it difficult to traverse the already choked road in the evening. Finding the iron bars poking out of the footpath, Raj does not find it safe to walk during night. "Due to inadequate light, walking on footpaths is not safe. Moreover, the dust from the construction projects diffuses into the air causing irritation to the eyes," Raj continued. He further added that under such condition local residents cannot take an evening walk on this stretch. Currently on a construction spree, the BBMP maintained that the road near the army residential quarters will be repaired soon and has been delayed because the ownership of the land was under dispute.

Amid administrative dispute, the residents and the office goers suffer, since the road adjacent to the residential quarters has remained like this for the past few years. “If the issue has been settled, why the road has not been constructed. The gravel has been laid making it difficult for two-wheeler riders,” Dilip Kumar said. He further lamented that the roads have been dug up by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWWSB). “They dig the road and then do not even care to restore it. It shows that there is a lack of co-ordination amongst the agencies.”

The heap of garbage under the transformers and the hoardings of political parties at the signal not only impede the movement of the pedestrians, but has also turned into an eyesore.

‘We will install CCTV to curb illegal garbage dumping’

Interview with Sanjeev Kumar, Assistant Executive Engineer, BBMP

IeIllegal dumping of garbage has become rampant near Army quarters at Ejipura.
Are you aware of it?

We have been taking lot of measures to curb illegal dumping of garbage. During night people throw away garbage. We have recommended CCTV cameras to be set up and take serious action against offenders.

The road heading towards army quarters from Inner Ring Road is in a bad shape.
There was dispute over the ownership of the road between BBMP and Defence. Now the issue has been resolved.

If the property issue has been settled then why the road is not yet asphalted?
We have levelled the road and had put gravel too. But BWSSB wanted to lay water pipeline. So we are waiting for them to lay the pipe. They have assured to complete the process in another two days and then we shall asphalt the road in one week.
