Hyderabad's Karuna Mantena Wins Infosys Prize 2023 in Social Sciences

HYDERABAD: Hyderabad's Karuna Mantena, professor, political science, Columbia University was awarded the Infosys Prize 2023 for her contributions in the field of social sciences at an event held in Bengaluru.

There were six winners in all, chosen from 224 nominations by a jury panel chaired by eminent academics. The areas covered were engineering and computer science, humanities, life sciences, mathematical sciences, physical sciences and social sciences.

The winners were awarded with a gold medal, a citation and a prize purse of $100,000 by Nobel laureate Professor Brian Schmidt.

Over the past 15 years, the Infosys Prize has recognised mid-career researchers for their impactful work across disciplines and significant contributions to scientific research India.

The other winners were: IIT-Kanpur professors Sachchida Nand Tripathi and Arun Kumar Shukla, Science Gallery Bengaluru founding director Jahnavi Phalkey, Bhargav Bhatt who is Fernholz joint professor at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton University, and Mukund Thattai, professor, biochemistry, biophysics and bioinformatics, National Centre for Biological Sciences.

The event was attended by scientists and academics, business leaders, young researchers, and students, according to a statement. Trustees of the Infosys Science Foundation – Kris Gopalakrishnan (president, bard of trustees), Narayana Murthy, Srinath Batni, K. Dinesh, Nandan Nilekani, Mohandas Pai, Salil Parekh, and S.D. Shibulal were present.

“It is a genuine privilege to be part of the Infosys Prize ceremony this year, which highlights the remarkable contributions that Indians are making to the advancement of knowledge through research,” said Prof. Brian Schmidt.
