Eucalyptus on roadsides causes havoc in Ooty
Ooty: The Baduga Desa Party (BDP) appealed to the Nilgiris district administration to remove the huge eucalyptus and other such trees along the road margins across the hills as uprooted trees along the roads have proved to be big havoc-creators in the recent heavy rains.
Stating that the time has come to review the lurking danger in the guise of giant-size eucalyptus trees and other such trees like the cypress which are found growing along the roadsides in the Nilgiris, Mr.Manjai V.Mohan, president of the BDP, said that during the British era these exotic trees were planted across the hills as they catered to fuel wood needs in those days.
“These well grown and huge trees have lost their stability and pose a threat to the texture of the soil along the slopes. It is a known fact that eucalyptus trees grow to the height of over 70 meters. When these giant trees get uprooted, they bring down the soil mass along with them and block the road,
playing havoc with traffic as well as soil stability and ecology of the slopes. An uprooted eucalyptus tree wrecked havoc even along the Garden road in Ooty town limits,” he pointed out.
These trees may be replaced with ornamental avenue trees to add to the aesthetic beauty of the hills, he suggested.
