Security Tightened at Maharashtra Legislature

Mumbai: A major security breach at the parliament cast a heavy shadow on the proceedings of the ongoing winter session of the Maharashtra Legislature on Wednesday with the authorities tightening security at the Vidhan Bhavan complex in Nagpur.

Vidhan Sabha speaker Rahul Narwekar and Vidhan Parishad deputy chairperson Neelam Gorhe took a review of security in the Vidhan Bhavan Complex and directed the officials to ensure no untoward incident happens during the winter session.

Gorhe gave instructions to officials not to issue the council gallery passes to visitors. After the parliament incident, the authorities went on an alert mode and scrutinised people entering the Vidhan Bhavan with extra precaution.

The parliament security breach issue also had its reverberations in the State Legislature with the leader of opposition in the Vidhan Parishad Ambadas Danve seeking explanation on the matter. He also sought to know what precautions the state government was taking against this backdrop.

Replying to him, industries minister Uday Samant assured that the state government will take all the necessary precautions and is capable of ensuring the safety of legislators at the legislature.

Former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan also expressed his concern calling the Lok Sabha incident a major scare. “A youth from Maharashtra is involved in the parliament incident. It can also happen in Maharashtra. Hence, necessary security measures should be taken at the Vidhan Bhavan. It also needs to be checked whether the incident was related to the Maratha reservation issue,” he said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has asked the state director general of police (DGP) to procure details about Amol Shinde, one of the parliament intruders who hailed from Latur in Maharashtra.

Following the orders, a team of Latur police reached the home of Shinde at Zari village, questioned his parents and raided his small dwelling. The police thoroughly searched his home, the cupboards and other furniture, looking for documents or other evidence that could give clues pertaining to the Parliament incident.
