NE monsoon withdraws from Rayalaseema

Vishakhapatnam: The Northeast Monsoon rains have ceased over Rayalaseema and the adjoining areas of Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Kerala’s Mahe, south interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu-Puducherry-Karaikal and Yanam since Sunday.

Stating this, Amravati IMD’s senior scientist S. Karunasagar said the overall deficit from the northeast monsoon was 63 per cent in the AP. Coastal Andhra Pradesh was completely dry now.

The Northeast Monsoon set in over the southern peninsula on October 18, shortly after the withdrawal of the Southwest Monsoon.

Andhra Pradesh faced a deficit of 13 per cent in the Southwest Monsoon season. Anantapur district recorded the highest rain deficit of 34 per cent. Among the total of 17 districts, only the Krishna district recorded an excess rainfall of 32 per cent during this period.

The deficit rainfall during the Northeast Monsoon has affected the sowing of Rabi crops in AP. Out of the 14 lakh hectares, sowing has taken place in 25 per cent of the area so far, as per agriculture sources.
