AI for water conservation wins TSPCB hackathon

Hyderabad: A team of two PhD students and a research scholar won the Telangana State Pollution Control Board's (TSPCB) five-day long Eco-Champions Hackathon competition with their AI solution to water management.

The team, of Rajesh Muddu and Satish Mummidivarapu, both of LSI (Lab of Spatial Informatics) and Thomas David, of the SPCRC (the Signal Processing and Communication Research Centre), took home a cash prize of Rs 50,000 for their low-cost IoT-based sensor for effective water management.

The winning team, mentored by Prof. K.S. Rajan, Prof. Rehana Shaik and Prof. Sachin Chaudhari, decided to develop and deploy affordable sensors that could not only measure water flow rates to optimise usage but also monitor water levels in tanks to flag leaks, if any, thereby reducing wastage.

“We integrated the sensors with an Arduino-based platform, enabling real-time monitoring and data collection. The collected data is wirelessly transmitted to a central server or mobile

app, allowing users to track their water consumption patterns, identify inefficiencies, and make informed decisions for effective water management,” Rajesh said.

As many as 314 teams took part in the event.
