Vijayawada: Stinking smell and pollutants from Jawahar Autonagar are creating problems to the residents of Murali Nagar.
The colony, which is located in Kanuru panchayat limits, bounded by Ramavarappadu and Currency Nagar in Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) limits is facing issues related to sanitation and pollution.
Murali Nagar, which was once a fast-developing colony in city, is now facing problems due to poor sanitation.
The population of the colony almost doubled, apart from huge apartments and group houses, and all the people are facing problems due to lack of side drains and improper roads.
“Problems have become common in our colony. Though in the capital region, we do not have proper roads and there are huge potholes formed in the colony creating problems due to stagnation of water. “Vacant lands in the colony have become hubs for dumping industrial waste of Autonagar and chemical smell emanating from them are leading to breathing disorder. Despite our complaints to the officials, the panchayat department is ignoring our issues,” said T. Janardhana Rao, a colony resident.
Pollutants from nearby industrial area are polluting the colony and the groundwater in the colony depleted up to 200 feet.
“Groundwater in our area has reduced in the last three years. The irrigation canal flowing beside the colony got polluted due to industrial waste and it also would lead to breeding of mosquitoes,” said M. Neeraja a homemaker.
