Liquor shop owners eye business from tourists

The Excise department has proposed these shops in view of the increased sales in these areas.

Warangal: In Jayashankar Bhupalapalli district, permission for five new liquor stores has been granted. As a result, good competition to take over these liquor stores can be expected.

At present, there are 50 wine shops in the district of which 41 are in rural areas and nine in Bhupalapalli town. The five new shops will come up in the rural areas.

The Excise department has proposed these shops in view of the increased sales in these areas. The areas where sales had exceeded the target were identified and the additional shops were allotted there.

In Vajedu mandal there is one liquor store in Dharmaram village, in view of increased tourist footfall to the Bogatha waterfall, the Excise department decided to allocate one more shop in the mandal headquarters. While there are already two shops in Mogullapalli, one more shop was added there.

Similarly one in Regonda mandal, one is Venkatapur mandal headquarters and one in Lakshmidevipeta village of the same mandal were allotted.

This year, the Excise department prepared four slabs instead of the existing six. Two of them are applicable in the district.

Previously, Rs 40.8 lakh in mandal headquarters and Rs 39.5 lakh was charged in major panchayats.

This year, these two slabs were clubbed and made into a single slab of '45 lakh. This slab applies to 46 wine shops in the district. The other nine shops that are in urban areas come under the Rs 55 lakh slab.

Excise officials said they have started taking applications for new shops from Wednesday. The last date to submit applications is September 19. Lots will be drawn on September 22. The new policy will come into force on October 1 this year and will end on September 20, 2019.
