Kerala police clueless on artificial egg

Police sources said on Thursday that it was the first such case in the district.

KOTTAYAM: Police is yet to ascertain if the eggs supplied by a Namakkal-based firm a week ago, which they seized from a stationary store at Kunchithanny, Idukki, were artificial. The shop owner had given a written complaint on Wednesday, and the police left the job to the food safety department as the entire state is concerned about it. “We have intimated the concerned food inspector about it. But none visited the place yet,” Vellathooval sub-inspector S. Sivalal told DC.

The doubts were on some 2,500 eggs, and the consignee complained to the police on Monday. The load is now at the Vellathooval police station, and the employees of the Namakkal firm had ruled out discrepancies. “The hotel that purchased them complained that it was getting broken when boiled and also there is a coating similar to that of plastic inside,” Siby Baby, who runs the shop, told DC. He said he had also intimated the food and safety authorities about it. Police sources said on Thursday that it was the first such case in the district.
